Taco Mornings

20140428-taco-mornings
I love having a taco night and I love using the leftover ingredients in the morning just the same. I usually do a taco night once a month, it’s sort of a lot of prep work the way I do them. I usually marinate the carne asada that morning then get home and put together various bowls containing cilantro and onion, salsa, lettuce, cheese, limes, and sour cream more or less. Sometimes I buy relatively fresh tortillas from the hispanic market down the way, sometimes I’ll buy masa from them and make them myself. When I’m up for the work, taco nights are great but I’m becoming more and more obsessed with using the leftovers to make some sort of breakfast in the morning.

Holy Onion Rings

20140425-onion-rings
These are hands down my favorite onion rings. They have the perfect smoky, seasoned buttermilk flavor and the onion breaks off perfectly when you bite into it. I started by marinating one yellow onion that I had cut into rings in buttermilk (enough to somewhat submerge the rings) and 2 teaspoons of my Emiril Schmemeril Seasoning.

Emeril Schmemeril Seasoning

Sometimes I use a seasoning blend that’s a riff I did on Emeril’s “Essence” (Emeril’s Creole Seasoning). Here’s the recipe, I use it on chicken, onion rings, and all sorts of other dishes:

1 tablespoon smoked paprika
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon garlic powder
½ tablespoon black pepper
½ tablespoon onion powder
½ tablespoon cayenne pepper
½ teaspoon dried leaf oregano
½ teaspoon dried thyme
¼ teaspoon cumin

Naughty Row Row Tricks

20140423-naughty-rowan
A couple of days ago, while I was working from home, Rowan pulled paper towels out of the trash that had I used to soak up beef fat and began eating them. I’ve had my new trash can for four months and thought it was impenetrable. It is tall and has a lid heavy enough to keep Rowan out, or so I thought. What pissed me off most about this is that Rowan jeopardized the kitten. Stitch Murphy was sitting right next to him trying to join in on the fun. By now I know that Rowan has a stomach of steel and is in no way prone to pancreatitis but he could’ve made the kitten really sick. I yelled at him and he ran to the bed and did this pose. I really can’t stay mad at him for long, he is uncommonly cute.

I’ve been thinking that, when you have a little dog who is as food motivated and hyper as Rowan, it is like being the parent of a toddler who never grows older and is hell-bent on eating anything that remotely resembles food. Part of my relationship with Rowan involves discovering and putting an end to his food retrieval techniques. For the longest time, I kept bread, rice, and tortillas (since I use these items pretty often) on a waist-high rack that is in my woodblock island in the kitchen.

Well, one night while I was sleeping (this is before I began locking Rowan in the bedroom at night) Row Row perfected the method of standing in the lowest rack of the island while nudging food items through the space between the wood slats to the end of the rack and, finally, getting out of the island and standing on his tip-toes to retrieve the food items from the edge of the rack. I woke up in the middle of that night to find Rowan just finishing off a bag of corn tortillas. He had already eaten an entire loaf of onion dill rye bread and half a bag of uncooked rice. FYI, uncooked rice just goes right through them pretty much unchanged. Before this incident, Rowan got some uncooked rice but I couldn’t figure out how and I didn’t know that he ate the rice until I saw his rice poop the next day.

Anyhow, I took Rowan to the emergency clinic that night to induce vomiting and he ended up being just fine. I called them when I was leaving to find out the cost of these things and to tell them what my dog had done. When I walked in the door the receptionist said, “That little guy ate all that? I thought you were going to bring a lab in.” No, my lab was still sleeping like an angel at home. Then, and I’m really not making this up, Rowan shit on their welcome mat.

Welcome to Angelgrrl.com

20140421-rachel-toon

Welcome! Today is the grand opening, the first day that I’m inviting all my friends (and everyone else in the world) to visit. I love cooking, animals, and family so that’s what I write about. You can count on seeing one of my recipes here every Friday.

If you’re wondering where the name “Angelgrrl” came from, it was something my Dad thought of when I was a little girl. I insisted on wearing dresses almost everywhere, but I was a very aggressive soccer player and loved almost all sports. He bought me the domain name for Christmas back then and it sat on the shelf for a long time, but here we are. Most importantly, while I was growing up he taught me to believe that I can be or do anything I want to.

My Dad is my editor, I do the photography and writing and he catches most of the typos. He also designed the site style.

Stitch Murphy

stitch-murphy-about
Stitch Murphy (aka Stitch, Stitch Murf, Murfles) is the most recent addition to our family. All I can say about Stitch so far is that he is incredibly playful and sweet. He loves the dogs, and acts like them a lot of the time. Stitch is obsessed with food, there is no food item that he has not shown interest in.

Freya

freya-about
I tell Freya (aka French Fry, Frenchie, Fryers, Frey Frey) that she is a slut (in a nice way of course) a lot because she is constantly trying to lick me. Let’s be honest, Freya is not very smart but she makes up for it by being sweet. She is incredibly sweet. She even licks Rowan’s eye boogers and Loki’s hanging mouth drool.

Rowan

rowan-about
Rowan (aka RowRow, Rogan Bear, psycho pants, chi-coo, door-stop, turkey) spent his childhood living with drug lords on a coca farm in Colombia. This fact is completely reflected in his personality. Rowan has two modes at home, he is either acting like he just hit a crack pipe or he is sleeping. I cannot even begin to tell you all the mischief he has caused in our household. However, Rowan is extremely cute, so it’s impossible be angry with him for more than a second.

Loki

loki-about
Loki (aka Lokster, Lokins, Almond Roki) is the 90 lb. Lab of my life. He is a typical Lab in that he will always try and stick his head in a trash can of any sort and he can be pretty goofy at times, but I am incredibly lucky to have such a mellow, awesome dog. Loki follows us around at home all the time and he lets you do anything to him. I have nothing bad or funny to say about Loki, he’s just an all-around good dog.

Mr. Kitty

mr-kitty-about
Mr. Kitty will fuck you up. For real, he is the biggest cuddle bug with me but he won’t let anyone but Gar or I touch him. When Mr. Kitty got neutered way back when, he escaped from the clutches of the technicians who were working with him and got into the ceiling of the surgery suite. Eventually, Mr. Kitty had to be caught with a net and tranquilized through the net. Kitty was the first animal that was truly mine and he is so dear to me I cannot even begin to express my love for him. If Mr. Kitty were a Spice Girl, he would be Posh Spice.

Angelgrrl C’est Moi

rachel-about
I think of myself as a sort of punk Martha Stewart who also likes animals, guns, the outdoors, hockey, and a handful of other nerdy shit. One’s livelihood is everything. I didn’t get my BA in Philosophy to make money, I got it because I love challenging myself as much as possible and I want to continue living in a constant state of education forever.

One day, probably after focusing on my family for a while, I will go back to grad school and teach philosophy. I have a tremendous passion for animals and love working at a veterinary hospital. I love living on an organic orchard, because I’m nowhere near street traffic and the only neighbors I can see from my doorstep are trees and birds.

I love to read and stare at all my books. My books tell me where I’ve been, and where I am, and where I want to go. I love to cook and marvel at all the wonderful things we can do with food. Most importantly, I love focusing on my family.

Welcome Stitch Murphy

20140402-stitchmurphy1
Shortly after my beloved Fenris passed, I knew I wanted another cat. However, I decided this time I was going to be extremely picky. I adopted my last two cats as adults (well Fenris was supposedly an adult at the time) from rescue groups and this time around I wanted a kitten with a good upbringing for various reasons. Firstly, I wanted a kitten because he (I usually always choose male animals but that is another story) would have the best chance of getting along with 10-year-old Mr. Kitty. I also wanted the kitten to grow up around the dogs and not hate their guts. Finally, I wanted a kitten who spent the first 8 weeks of his life with his mom and siblings in order to not be fearful and have social manners as far as cats go. I would like to say at this point that there are countless amazing adult cats available for adoption at shelters and rescue groups. However, I felt that a kitten who had a good upbringing was ideal for my family at the time.

Perfectly Poached Egg

20140401-poached-egg
To make a perfectly poached egg, you just need a few things. First, add 2-3 tablespoons of white vinegar to your water (I use a 4 quart pot filled ¾ of the way with water). Second, make sure you water is softly boiling. This is SO important, if your water is boiling too hard you will loose some of your egg white and potentially overcook your egg.

I like cracking my egg into a small shot glass before quickly dropping it right above the water. The shot glass seems to get the egg in a nice position. Also, you can scoop up your egg with a slotted spoon and blot the excess water with a paper towel. I usually take mine out as soon as the egg white is cooked and I lightly tap the center to make sure the egg yolk is bouncy and not firm indicating that it will be nice and runny.

Suckie Poachie

20140331-suckie-poachie
I’m almost ashamed to say it, but I bought these things to help make a perfectly poached egg. Well, they don’t make anything near a good poached egg. The egg comes out watery, strangely shaped, and some of the egg white stuck to the contraption. Tomorrow I’ll post the back-to-basics method for making a good poached egg. Happy Monday!

Poutine

20140328-poutine
It’s time for poutine! When my friend up north first told me about poutine, I thought, “Is that some sort of slang or cuss word I’ve never heard of before?” It turns out poutine is not some strange disease or dirty word, it’s a deliciously awesome dish. You just need to find cheese curds. I don’t know what it is about Southern California, but almost every non-foodie that I mention cheese curds to gives me a disgusted look. Then I explain cheese curds and tell them that if they like string cheese they will love cheese curds. I don’t tell them this but I’m sure they would even like goat cheese curds if you didn’t mention they were made from goat’s milk. Enough about that…. back to to Poutine! Essentially, poutine is fries, cheese curds, and gravy. I keep meaning to make variations of poutine and also add something like corned beef but it just hasn’t happened yet.

Green Garlic

20140325-green-garlic-fm
I found this at the farmer’s market. The guy behind the table said, “Have you seen our green garlic? It’s our special today and it’s not going to last long.” I asked him if you could use the green stalk portion and he said yes. At home, I dis-assembled the stalk of my green garlic and only used the heart of it like I would a leek. The stalk is basically a small version of a leek except it has a mild garlic flavor instead of a mild onion flavor.

Farewell Fenris

20140320-farewell-fenris
I did not want to mention this at first, but, the day before we left for camping my three year old Maine Coon mix, Fenris, dropped dead. I had just finished picking up some things for camping in the early evening when Garrick called and told me he thought Fenris had just dropped dead in the office for no apparent reason. I could not believe it at first. Fenris was so young and healthy. I came home and confirmed for myself what Gar had told me, then took him to my work to meet with a co-worker and take care of his remains. The doctor is certain that Fenris died from a practically undetectable heart problem called cardiomyopathy. I basically cried the whole rest of the day.

The first few days of camping were bittersweet and I was exhausted but the trip was a blessing. I was able to have five days of separation from my work, and being there would have inevitably triggered my sadness. Also, I didn’t have to be home where it happened.

I had such a good time camping. I was very happy to have no phone service most of the time I was there. Mostly, my mind was concerned about when and where the next hike is and when and what the next meal is. This simplified existence along with the omnipresent natural beauty of the place was extremely therapeutic. Nature is magical to me and I find myself entranced by it every day regardless of whether I’m camping or not. I once wrote a paper analyzing the importance that J.R.R. Tolkien placed upon nature in his novels titled, “Nature: The Antithesis of Evil.” I don’t know why I felt compelled to mention that but there it is.

Fenris was a great cat. He was extremely sweet to the dogs and Gar and I. He practically was a dog himself. I got Fenris from a rescue group and they told me he was about a year or two old. It turned out, he was much younger when I got him than anyone thought. About 5 months later, Fenris needed to have surgery on both his hips in order to be able to walk again. The specialist told me that he was likely a year old or a little younger at that time based upon his x-rays. The specialist said that the rescue group probably thought he was older because he was relatively big and that the problem Fenris had is one that Maine Coon cats are prone to. Even knowing what I know now, I would not not change the past and would still have done his surgery.

Ultimately, I am blessed in a lot of ways. I am grateful Garrick was home when Fenris passed and that he did not suffer.
