Too Busy to Post

Sorry I’ve been too busy to post lately. I just started studying to become a registered veterinary technician and that is going to take about a year. I started working with this vet hospital when I was in college and I thought someday I’d be teaching philosophy. But I really like what I’m doing here and I love working with animals. To get the most out of this experience, I want to be certified and learn all aspects of veterinary work.

I want to post more than I have lately, but I’m not sure when that will be. Hopefully I’ll be back in about six months. Stay tuned!

Blog Break

20150810-rachel-lab
Hello everyone, I will be taking a while off from blogging in order to snuggle puppies. As kids go back to school, there will be a shortage of family puppy snugglers but, thankfully, I’m willing to fill the void.

In reality, this is not the case as much as I wish it was. The next couple of weeks are actually crunch time for my Practice of the Year application at work and I barely have time for anything right now. However, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I will have plenty of wedding posts coming up. I just finished making invitations and they turned out so beautiful. I’ll be putting together centerpieces and trying on wedding dresses so stay tuned.

Practice of the Year

Why have I been so busy lately? Well, I’m always busy working 40-50 hour weeks, regardless, but I decided that on top of all of the extra things I do besides tech/assistant work, that our hospital should apply for the American Animal Hospital Association’s (AAHA) Practice of the Year title. If you haven’t heard of AAHA, it is our industry’s only independent accreditation organization and the hospital I work for is accredited. AAHA hospitals voluntarily undergo regular inspections and are evaluated in literally hundreds of standards. Ok so… Practice of the Year… very detailed, time-intensive application… 7 weeks… that’s how much time we had to complete the application when I learned more about this accolade and we decided to go for it… This is the start of week three. Some of the application consists of essay-type submissions that are answers to specific questions. I want to post something I wrote for the introduction section of the application because I think it does a great job of reflecting my love for this field and some of the reasons why I stay in it and continue to find ways to grow. In one part of the introduction section you are asked to describe why your hospital is unique in 500 words or less. Since I will end this post with what I wrote, I will just add that you can expect puppy and kitten posts to finish out this week. This week will be my warm and fuzzy feeling posting week. I need to remind myself of the warm and fuzzies considering I’m constantly feeling like a grade school student who didn’t finish her book report in time except my book report is fixing a recall on my car or getting wedding invitations together. So here it goes, this is why our hospital is unique in 490 words (ps. I tried reading this to the staff at an all-hands meeting last week and had to have one of the doctors finish reading it so that I didn’t start crying):

If you were to ask every staff member at our hospital what about it they are proud of, you will get a long, varied list of answers. We are proud of our AAHA accreditation and Cat Friendly Practice certification. We are proud of the level of medicine and care we provide. We are proud of our facilities, our community, and each other.

When you ask every staff member at our hospital what makes our hospital unique, each individual will generate a singular, compelling response: our team. The importance of a veterinary hospital’s team is tremendous. Every single staff member executes our standard for care and compassion, they are a beacon for our message and recommendations, they are patient advocates, and they are, in a great sense, the establishers of each other’s quality of life. With the tremendous amount of time and energy that individuals devote to our field, we must recover and recharge somehow. Luckily, we do this by leaning on each other.

We go to great lengths to ensure that we create and maintain a cohesive and supportive team unit. Our hiring process is extensive, consisting of a handful of interviews for each candidate and ending with a review form completed by every existing team member. Aside from initial training, all team members participate in a continued education topic at bi-monthly meetings and are allotted a yearly allowance for continued education. Team outings occur quarterly each year but often times occur informally much more often than that. In the past few years, we have had the pleasure of getting together to enjoy dinners, baseball games, bowling night, game night, and pot luck thanksgivings.

Our team is exceptional in so many ways. Our doctors have visited patients in critical care at referral specialty hospitals and made themselves uncommonly available to discuss patient care to the team, clients, and other professionals. Our team members regularly send out cards on their own accord to clients to acknowledge events in their lives and in their pet’s lives. Our staff turnover is very low and the average amount of time our staff has been employed here is over 6 years. Every member is positive and supportive of one another. Every member cares deeply about pets and their people.

We are fortunate to have leaders who understand the value of utilizing the unique skills of each individual and encouraging personal growth. We have had multiple entry level staff members who are on their way to become or have become successful RVTs and doctors of veterinary medicine. If we assigned additional informal titles to our current team members, the list of titles would include party planner, storm chaser, personal chef, pet sitter, professional organizer, pet nutrition enthusiast, botanist, dog agility and training specialist, and social media expert among many others. Our hospital is only as unique as the individuals realizing its existence each and every day and what a unique hospital we do, in fact, have.

Lake Tahoe

20150602-lake-tahoe1
I love seeing new things, and was lucky enough to spend the afternoon traveling around the circumference of Lake Tahoe. The colors of the lake aren’t exactly describable, but the center is generally a deep blue while the shore fluctuates between shades of blue, turquoise, teal and green. My favorite section of the lake was Emerald Bay, from which the first photograph is taken. There is a Scandinavian castle named Vikingsholm in the bay that I look forward to visiting in the future.

Rough Couple of Weeks

As if day after day of working overtime for the past week or so was not draining enough, I began this week with one of the worst cases of neglect I have ever seen and a very loving family whose three year old dog was hit by a car and killed as a result of a freak accident. After extensive efforts, the doctor and I were unable to resuscitate that dog. Just the thought of that family still causes my eyes to well up. My empathy allows me to be absolutely great at my job but it also leaves me susceptible to great emotional fatigue at times. The two incidents this week, especially in comparison to each other, left me utterly drained. My request to take a personal day today was granted.

I wanted to write this post to give everyone a little update, thank you for your great comments, and let you know that I plan to increase my posting efforts more and more. I have also been volunteering some of my time to help an absolutely incredible cat sanctuary and I look forward to presenting more information about this in the coming week. I’m also planning on getting married this year so stay tuned and thanks again for your support.

Purple Flowers

20150211-purple-flowers

My drive to and from work is so pretty this time of year. On one side, there are grassy mountains in the distance surrounding the canyon I drive and, on the other, there are these sandy hills. That plant in the foreground with the purple flowers is sprinkled all over the hills, very pretty. I’m not sure what it is though. It grows like lavender and the flowers have a little bit of yellow on them and smell kind of like honeysuckle or fruit blossoms. If you’re reading this mom, please excuse my native plant ignorance. I’ve tried to find out what plant this is a few times without finding a definitive answer.

Color Run

20150115-color-run
A few months ago, I signed up for a 5k where they throw color powder at you as you run and they give you some to throw at each other before the race. I figured that it would not be not fun at the least. When I signed up, my conditioning was ok but I wasn’t sure that I could run 3.1 miles with relative ease. It turns out I can. About a month ago, I started running longer and longer distances and it feels so good. Now I can run 6 miles with relative ease. I’ve never minded running but now I’m in love. Not only was the 5k not not fun, it was really effing fun. I strongly recommend doing a 5k with a friend or spouse even if you are walking the entire time. Lastly, I was also the only person there in black. I’m not exaggerating, every single person there wore white on account of showing the color and what not. I don’t do white. I just don’t like white t-shirts.

Lunch Breaks

20141230-clouds-walk
I would be incredibly content with taking two hour lunch breaks everyday so that I can have plenty of time to walk and/or run. However, two hour lunch breaks just aren’t possible. I usually work out in the morning but most days I seize the opportunity to take a slightly longer lunch so that I can completely separate myself from my job and be active and daydream and lay in the grass at a nearby park. My foot was bothering me last week so this was a day that I was walking… and I couldn’t stop staring at the sky.

White Elephant Poop

20141225-white-elephant-poop
Every year at my work holiday party we play White Elephant. I always get a gift card for the event because I’ve been stuck with a mug and hot cocoa mix before and I can’t say that I was thrilled… not to offend anyone who loves mugs and hot cocoa. So, this year baby Jesus was smiling down upon me and I will tell you why. I happened to be in the lobby a few weeks ago when a client brought in a fecal sample from her pet for testing and she had put the sample inside Tupperware inside a bag inside of this lovely Christmas bag with tissue paper and all.

This was hardly the first time that a client has told me that they brought us a “present” when bringing in their pet’s shit. In fact, every time I hear that phrase in that situation I’m mildly annoyed because everyone seems to think that it is such a funny joke that they themselves came up with. This time however, I was amused. The thought sprung forth into my mind so suddenly, “I must use this bag to put my White Elephant gift in and not tell anyone it’s a poopy bag until the very end.”

I would just like to say at this point that the bag was completely clean and not compromised in any way. However, there is one person I work with that I knew would totally be disgusted by the poopy bag revelation and I also knew she likes Amazon a lot… you can imagine where I bought my gift card to this year. Still, there is so much chance involved in White Elephant, it was a long shot that she would end up with my gift… but she did… and that is the story of my best White Elephant experience to date. Merry Christmas everyone!

Fantasy Football Playoffs

I’m in the playoffs in my fantasy football league and my team has been killing it. I won last week and I’m in the finals this week but I’m really nervous because I’m playing a great team. I would just like to take this moment to thank Jamaal Charles, DeMarco Murray, A.J. Green, Randall Cobb, Julio Jones, Andrew Luck, and Adam Vinatieri for all of my-I mean your-accomplishments this season. Murray, in particular, was one of the best pics for me this year. He wasn’t ranked incredibly high but I had heard a little bit of buzz about him and he’s had an incredible season. I hope my desperate dreams of success and glory (and money) aren’t crushed by a loss this week… fingers crossed.

Coconut Milk

I love a can of coconut milk for a lot of reasons but one of my favorite things to do with it is add a can to my turkey or chicken noodle soup. I’ve already made soup this way about three times in the past few months because I just cannot get enough of it. Homemade soup is the best. Just put your leftover chicken or turkey carcass in a large pot, fill with water, add a fair amount of salt, and boil to make your stock. Strain out your stock and pick off all the meat from the bones and return it to the stock. At this point I’ll check the salt content and I usually add a can of chicken broth or possibly some bullion to round out my stock. Finally your mirepoix and whatever else you want in your soup goes in. I love making a traditional noodle soup and adding the can of coconut milk and a few spicy dried thai chilies for some heat. The coconut milk provides a unique flavor that blends perfectly with the flavor of a traditional noodle soup and it is not too sweet. SO GOOD!

Happy Thanksgiving

There is so much to be thankful for everyday. I’m not even going to try to list the things that I am thankful for. Instead, I will just say this… I love food. I don’t just love to eat although eating is pretty awesome. I love food and I am amazed by it. Most days, when I conceive of meals I want to cook and eat I am amazed by the possibilities. My amazement is somewhat akin to returning to civilization after being stranded on a desert island for awhile and, for the first time, being in a grocery store with a substantial budget. I have a great respect and concern for the food we consume. Happy Thanksgiving everyone, I hope your day is/was safe and joyous.

God Made Girls… Rowan’s Song

Have you heard that country song, “God Made Girls?” Well if you haven’t, the verses essentially state that God made girls to keep boys in check and they list all of these random reasons like, “somebody’s gotta be the one to flirt, somebody’s gotta wear a pretty skirt” and so on. My hands down favorite insight into God’s reasoning for making girls is to “give him a reason to wash that truck.”

So this song inspired a bizarre fantasy story in my mind about Rowan. I made up a story (that in my head should be the next Pixar flick) where Rowan is a famous agility dog but he pretends to be a girl because he feels that it makes people more likely to worship him as the rising superstar that he is but all the other agility dogs who are normal and grounded know that Rowan or “Rowena” is a fake. Rowan wears skirts and tutus to hide his penis on and off of the agility course. Every time “Rowena” starts his agility runs he requires his song to be played, which is “God Made Girls.” I like to picture Rowan jumping over a hurdle and right when the chorus of his song plays, “God made girls” especially when the “girls” is sung, Rowan is in mid-air over the jump and is in slow motion while his fluffy mane pulses in the wind… amazing.

Tigger

Tigger is one of my favorite Disney characters. I was walking by the line to see him and said “uh no I will not stand in a line with kids to hug Tigger.” About ten steps later I changed my mind. I love the way the pictures turned out. Tigger made kissing sounds at me. Instead of being creeped out, I found this to be extremely flattering.

Cruella

20141029-cruella
I recently took a trip to Disneyland with some friends and had a blast. We decided to go to this brief show “Conjur a Villain” set-up inside of a carnival tent where one of a handful of Disney villains will appear and interact with the crowd. We got Cruella de Ville. At first, I was like, “Oh damn I was hoping for Hook.” However, I laughed my ass off in that tent. Every child that approached her was asked if they have puppies or might get puppies and she very cleverly communicated her disgust in many of the adult’s clothing. She told one couple that was wearing matching clothing that they must’ve decided to match so that they could look doubly terrible. When my group approached her for pictures she just looked at my Star Wars leggings and said, “Those legs!” She insisted on covering my legs with her coat for the picture… loved her!
